Pictures of Yellowstone Geysers

These are all scanned photos of the geothermal areas of Yellowstone National Park from our trip to western parks in 2002.

I really liked the geysers, especially this one which shot out of a pool (as opposed to a cone).

Another kind of geothermal feature are these pools of hot water. In this one as the water cools towards the edges different kinds of bacteria and algae live, making the different colors.

This is an example of a terrace, where the water flows down leaving interesting shapes. Again, it can be different temperatures and therefore different colors. When the water stops in a given area, it turns grey but the shapes are still interesting.

Another variation on the terrace theme.

Here is a pool of reddish mud which is getting shot into the air now and again.

The Yellowstone Handbook : An Insider's Guide to the Park

This is by Phil Frank (a local cartoonist) and his wife Susan. His books follow a common format, which is in FAQ form. They're extremely useful, funny, and he isn't afraid to say what is and isn't nice about a place. This includes everything to local features to where to get pizza. Yellowstone is a huge park and without some kind of a guide you'll probably stumble across interesting things, but you'll have a much better time with a little more information than the park map they give you at the gate.
